Privacy Policy

Rowan is a voice-guided cooking app. This policy explains what information the app collects, why, and what you can do about it. It covers the Rowan mobile app and rowancooks.co.
Information we collect
Information you give us
- Account details. Your email address when you create an account. If you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive the email address that service shares with us. We never receive your password for those services.
- Profile details. A display name and a profile photo, if you choose to add them.
- Cooking preferences. Your kitchen equipment, pantry staples and any food allergies you tell us about, so recipes can be built around them.
- What you say to Rowan. When you describe what is in your kitchen, the words are sent to our recipe service to work out which ingredients you named.
- Your recipes and cooking history. Recipes you save and a record of the cooks you complete.
- Photos you take. If you make a share card after cooking, the photo you pick is processed on your device. It is not uploaded to us.
Information collected automatically
- Usage analytics. Which parts of the app you use, so we can tell what is working and what is broken. Events are tied to a random identifier, or to your account ID once you sign in. We do not send your name or email address to our analytics provider.
- Crash and error reports. Technical details about failures in the app.
Voice and the microphone
Rowan uses your microphone in two places: to hear what is in your kitchen, and to listen for "Hey Rowan" while you cook. Speech is converted to text by your device's own operating system. We do not record, store or transmit audio from your microphone. Only the resulting text of what you said about your ingredients is sent to our servers, and only while you are actively dictating. While you are cooking, the wake-word listening happens entirely on your device and nothing is sent anywhere.
How we use it
- To generate recipes built around the ingredients, equipment and allergies you tell us about.
- To read those recipes aloud in Rowan's voice.
- To find a photo for each recipe.
- To keep your saved recipes and settings available across your devices.
- To send the reminders you turn on, which are scheduled on your device rather than sent from a server.
- To understand how the app is used and to fix problems.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for advertising.
Who we share it with
We use a small number of service providers to run the app. Each receives only what it needs.

We may also disclose information where the law requires it, or to protect the rights and safety of our users.
Keeping it
We keep your account information for as long as your account exists. Delete your account and we delete your profile, saved recipes, cooking history and preferences. Analytics events that are no longer linked to an existing account may be retained in aggregate.
Your choices
- Delete your account. Profile & Settings → Delete Account, inside the app. This is immediate and cannot be undone.
- Microphone. You can refuse or revoke microphone access in your device settings. Rowan still works: you can type what is in your kitchen instead, and tap to move between steps.
- Notifications. Turn reminders off in the app, or revoke the permission in your device settings.
- Access and correction. Email us at hello@rowancooks.co for a copy of your data or to have something corrected.
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under the GDPR, the UK GDPR or the CCPA, including the right to access, correct, delete, or port your information, and to object to certain processing. Contact us and we will honour them.
Children
Rowan is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has given us information, contact us and we will remove it.
International transfers
Our service providers operate in the United States and elsewhere. Using Rowan means your information may be processed in countries other than your own.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that matters, we will update the date above and, for significant changes, tell you in the app.
